Veranda from WÁRANDA (LINDA)

Post by ott »

Veranda, as used in the United Kingdom and France, was brought by the British from India (Hindi: बरामदा). While the exact origin of the word is unknown, scholars suggest that the word may have originated in India or may have been adopted from the Portuguese and spread further to the British and French colonists. Ancient and medieval Indian texts on domestic architecture like Vastu shastra uses the word "Alinda" for this architectural feature. (Wikipedia/veranda)
[104]/[105] (FRYA) SOCHTE SKUL VNDERA WÁRANDA LINDA. (...) A SADÉNERA WISE SEND WI AN HUSA KÉMEN MITH STOPPENBÀNKUM EN SLECHT AND WÁRANDA LINDA WITH THA SVNNESTRÉLUM.

103.26 (Frya) sought refuge under the sheltering linden tree. ... In this way we came to have houses with porches, a lane, and covering linden trees to take up the rays of the sun.

Both veranda and alinda will have been derived from WÁRANDA LINDA, and so the former word seems to have returned to us via a roundabout route.
