This post is pure speculation, or shall we say a hypothesis: that the modern cognate of the word “Foddik” is “fetish” (a cult object believed to be imbued with supernatural powers).
I have no evidence other than the similarities between the words themselves and their meanings.

In this case, I think etymonline's explanation "from Latin facticius "made by art, artificial," from facere "to make, do, produce" is more likely right.

Yet “Fackel“ is still the German word for torch, so the connection still stands.
